DIN SPEC 35808

Norm-Development [DIN SPEC 35808 “Treeshelter-Forest”] – Establishment – Validation – Finalisation

The development of DIN SPEC 35808 for biodegradable treeshelters made from renewable raw materials under forest conditions (including requirements and test methods) provides clear guidance for forestry practice and manufacturers – with the aim of identifying which treeshelters, based on their material properties and free from microplastic during biological degradation in forest environments, do not require manual from an environmental and ecological perspective.

To this end, preparatory work from the ‘www.TheForestCleanup.de’ project will be utilised to establish, validate and finalise DIN-compliant test methods:

  • for complete biodegradability (in accordance with Test III, i.e. burial in soil as per the draft DIN standard, Work Packages 1–2) to be established, validated and finalised (Work Package 3)
  • for complete bio-basedness, including potential weathering (establishment and validation already done) (WP3)

This is carried out in accordance with the DIN (German Norming Institution) standardisation process, involving consensus-building, formulation and publication. Selected material and treeshelters, as well as reference materials, are subjected to selected test methods (including ecotoxicity) and assessed using statistical forecasting methods, particularly with regard to complete biodegradation under forest conditions. The transfer of the project results to decision-makers is ensured, amongst other things, through the involvement of consortium partners, primarily from the forestry sector in Germany and also from the manufacturing industry. Work will be carried out as part of a strategy to reduce plastic in forests and to facilitate a successful innovation and standardisation process generating revenue and employment and above all, serving a better protection of forest ecosystems and ensuring a more sustainable forest management.
