The ForestCleanup

The collaborative project TheForestCleanup aims at the strategic development and decommissioning of tree shelters. During the development phase, innovative tree shelters are being created that must meet the following four requirements:

Made entirely from renewable raw materials

Fully biodegradable under forest conditions

Functionally equivalent to conventional tree shelters

Environmentally equivalent or superior in life cycle assessment compared to conventional tree shelters

Development:

Based on preliminary studies using material samples, two product challenges will provide NawaRo compounds and cellulose fabrics (Vulkanfiber) for extrusion and prototyping. The resulting prototypes will undergo extensive testing under laboratory and forest conditions to assess their biodegradability, functionality, and environmental compatibility. Statistical analysis of the results will inform the reengineering process, enabling continuous optimization of materials and prototypes until a production-ready solution is achieved.

Decommissioning:

This phase focuses on developing technical and socio-economic concepts for managing plastic tree shelters that remain in place. A comprehensive analysis of tree shelter systems across Germany will examine key aspects of forestry and human interaction: usage statistics, disposal and cost structures, customer preferences, internal and public communication strategies, legal frameworks, forestry funding practices, and procurement systems.
